One tile, six ways
The drawing crosses the joint
Every design runs off the edge of its hexagon and meets the next one, so a field reads as one pattern rather than as tiles.
Six designs in six colors, thirty six tiles in all, and one shape. There is no other size and no plain field to set them against.
Lay one design across the whole floor and the geometry repeats and settles. Mix them and it breaks up. Both are the same tile and the same order.
Interior walls and floors. Good in wet conditions. Ask us before you put it anywhere else.
The tile
There is one size
An 8" Hexagon, half an inch thick, with square edges and corners. That is the whole shape list.
- Actual size
- 8 1/8 by 8 1/8 inches
- Thickness
- 1/2 inch
- Edge
- Square
- Pieces per sq ft
- 2.3
- Weight per piece
- 2.6 lb
- Packaging
- 22 per box, 45 boxes per pallet
Coverage is based on a 1/4 inch grout joint.
The face is meant to look worked. The design is silk screened by hand onto a high fired red body, and the field around it is finished to read weathered rather than flat.
All thirty six
Six designs, six colors
Every design is made in every color, so the row is the drawing and the column is the color.
Each photograph is four tiles laid up, which is the only way to see where a design goes when it meets itself. Click any of them to open it full size and step through all thirty six.

Run one, or run them together. A single design repeated resolves into a larger geometry across the floor. Six mixed break it up. Every piece is fired by hand in Gardena, so the glaze varies from piece to piece and from firing to firing.
Applications
Where Silk Road can go
A short list, and a deliberate one. The same tile goes on a wall and on a floor, so the only real question is the substrate.
-
Walls All six designs, in all six colors.
-
Floors The same tile underfoot, at half an inch.
-
Indoor Kitchens, baths, halls and lobbies.
Good in wet conditions, and interior only. Ask us before you take Silk Road outside, and send us the drawing if the substrate is anything out of the ordinary.
Installed

Four rooms and two closer looks. Click any photograph to open it full size and step through the set.
- An office floor
- A design studio, front to back
- A bath, with the closet beyond
- A shower niche
- The screened face, close up
- The screened face, catching the light
Every piece is fired by hand in Gardena, so the glaze varies from piece to piece and from firing to firing.
The mix
Tell us the mix
Thirty six faces of one hexagon go together more ways than anyone can hold in their head.
Run one design across the whole floor and let the geometry resolve. Take one design through several colors. Or mix the designs and let it break up. All three are the same tile and the same order.
Tell us the mix. The room, roughly how much wall or floor, and which designs and colors caught your eye. We will work the rest out with you.

Custom is the standard
Two pieces or ten thousand
We started as a custom shop and we still run that way. Send a chip. Bring a swatch. Show us what you're building. We match a glaze to a color you already have, cut shapes that do not exist yet, and turn your own artwork into a handpainted design. A sample is fired before any production commitment.
The material
Built to outlast the install
The craft is in the maker's hands. The performance is in the fired clay body. ARTO publishes CSI 3-Part specifications and installation guides so architects and designers can specify with confidence.
-
The mix
Red Body Ceramic, Square Edge
Handcrafted in Gardena from high fired terracotta, a red body at half an inch with square edges and corners. The design is silk screened by hand onto a face finished to read weathered rather than flat. Every piece is made by hand, so size varies across a run.
-
The color
Six Color Combinations
Six designs made in six colors, thirty six in all, on a single eight inch hexagon. The color is fixed to the combination rather than chosen from a palette.
-
The documentation
Specs and Downloads
A CSI 3-Part master specification covers clay tile, 09 30 13 Quarry Tile. Cleaning, efflorescence and sealing guides are in the technical library.

Sampling
Always order a sample before you commit. What you see on a screen is not what your hand will know in the room. Samples ship from our Gardena facility.
Material truth
Rustic Elegance
Rough and refined at the same time. A handcrafted edge where no two pieces are exactly alike. Glaze fired over handmade clay, in a palette that reads differently at every hour of the day.
It is not a marketing phrase. It is a material truth. Far from perfect, and that is the whole point.
