Field and deco

One module, set as you like

The pattern can be scattered a tile at a time through a plain field, or packed solid into a panel, without changing the module of the wall.

A scirocco is a warm wind off the desert, and these are the warm wind tiles.

Seven glazes in the field: Scirocco Snow, Spice, Black, Gray, Turquoise, Brown and Gold. Thirty three screened patterns in the deco library, on the same red body.

All of it is made at 8x8, 6x6 and 4x4, half an inch thick with a square edge. The decos are sold by the piece, so you order exactly the pattern you place.

Walls and floors, inside and out. Freeze thaw resistant, and good in wet conditions. Pedestrian traffic, not vehicular. Ask us before you specify it for a pool.

The field

Seven colors, one body

The field is the plain tile the pattern is set into. It comes in seven colors, at 8x8, 6x6 and 4x4, and every deco is made in those same three sizes.

The decos share all of it. Same three sizes, same body, same weights. They are sold by the piece rather than by the box, so you order the number of tiles you are going to set.

Coverage is based on a 1/4 inch grout joint.

Ancient quad designs, drawn from the Arabian desert and from Southern Italy.

Every one is made at 8x8, 6x6 and 4x4 and sold one tile at a time. Each completes across four tiles, which is why each is shown here as four.

Every piece is screened and fired by hand in Gardena, so the glaze varies from piece to piece and from firing to firing.

Thirty three drawings have been screened onto this tile. The thirty fourth can be yours.

A custom design covers artwork conversion, screen setup, and one sample tile fired before you commit to anything. Custom color combinations too, on a design that already exists.

A new screen carries a one time setup charge. Ask us for it when you send the drawing.

We started as a custom shop and we still run that way. Send a chip. Bring a swatch. Show us what you're building. We match a glaze to a color you already have, cut shapes that do not exist yet, and turn your own artwork into a handpainted design. A sample is fired before any production commitment.

The material

Built to outlast the install

The craft is in the maker's hands. The performance is in the fired clay body. ARTO publishes CSI 3-Part specifications and installation guides so architects and designers can specify with confidence.

  • The mix

    Red Body Ceramic, Square Edge

    Handcrafted in Gardena from high fired terracotta, a red body at half an inch with a square edge. The deco is screened onto the same body as the field, at the same three sizes. Every piece is made by hand, so size varies across a run.

  • The color

    Seven Field Glazes

    Scirocco Snow, Spice, Black, Gray, Turquoise, Brown and Gold, a range of its own rather than a cut of the main ceramic palette. Thirty three screened patterns are set into that field.
