The Story
Throughout this Scripps College building in Claremont, ARTO's Monrovia ceramic tile in the Braun glaze carries a single warm color through many spaces. Square tiles pave the arched loggias, balcony walkways and pergola-covered paths, where columns and climbing vines cast patterned shadows across the floor. Indoors, Monrovia Hexagon runs the length of a long white hallway and fills small sitting nooks, while Monrovia Octagon lines a window bay framed by carved arches. Outside, the tile climbs the steps into the courtyard and up a long interior stair. The Braun glaze has a rich reddish-brown tone with gentle variation from tile to tile, a natural fit for the college's white plaster walls, wood beams and green doors.
