The Story
The arcades of San Diego State University's Engineering Building are paved in ARTO's handcrafted 10" Artillo concrete tile in Spanish Cotto. The tile runs the full length of the covered walkways, set on the diagonal through the main run and switched to a square grid at the bays and doorways, which gives the long corridors a gentle rhythm. Its warm terracotta tones, with soft variation from tile to tile, sit easily against the white plaster arches, dark wood beams, iron lanterns and teal window frames of the Spanish Colonial style building. Up close, the slightly worn surface and hand-finished edges show the character of each piece.
