The Story
Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles is a historic market that first opened in 1930. To help restore it, ARTO made custom clay bricks and tiles to replicate the originals. The new pavers run the length of the market lane, laid in herringbone and framed by soldier-course borders, past colorful vendor stalls and under the shade of large trees. Around the plaza, the brick circles the bandstand and meets the stone steps, and matching pieces finish a low ledge and step. The bricks have a warm red-orange color with soft variation from piece to piece, so the restored paving blends with the old buildings and feels at home in this much-loved public place.
