M3LD Fireplace, Salt Lake City

In this Salt Lake City living room, the fireplace wall is clad from mantel height to crown molding in Brute, a dimensional concrete tile from the M3LD collaboration, in Early Gray. Each square tile is carved with arcs, curves and straight channels, and together they form a graphic, maze-like relief around the firebox. The pale concrete stands out between two black built-in bookcases filled with ceramics and books, and its soft shadows shift with the light from the tall windows. A pale stone surround frames the firebox below. Blue and gray seating, a white coffee table and bold black-and-white art complete the room. Each tile is handcrafted, so the surface carries a gentle, natural variation in tone.
